Antelope Canyon is a slot canyon about a 20 minute drive
from downtown Paige, AZ. The canyon is located on Navajo land, and wasn’t
discovered until 1931 by a 12yr old Navajo girl herding sheep.
The canyon itself is anywhere from about 4-8’ wide and is
around 25-40’ deep, however, Upper Antelope can range to nearly 100’ deep.
The land has been carved over time by flash floods that cut through the
sandstone leaving a magnificent display that changes with the changing light of
the day. Each visit into the canyons can be unique and different purely
based on the time of day that you visit.
Access to the canyons is now restricted by the Navajo’s,
mostly due to a flash flood in 1997 that killed more than a dozen tourists and
photographers. The Upper Canyon is easily accessible with little effort as the
entire length is flat. Lower Antelope does require some ladder climbing for
descent, but this comes with the benefit of fewer tourists squeezing through
tight quarters -- the Upper Canyon can be quite a zoo during certain times of
year.
